Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens!
2 Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his excellent greatness!
3 Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
4 Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
5 Praise him with sounding cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!
Today the masses will Praise.
They will praise their new job. They will praise their new baby. They will praise the new set of friends that make the new city they live in feel like a place they have always been.
People will rejoice in the joy of their own hard work.
Some will sing songs of Thanksgiving with the talents they are certain they cultivated themselves.
Democrats and Republicans alike will praise politics and political leaders for freedom and social justice .
Today heaps of Praise will be bestowed upon creation.
Romans 1 makes it clear that left to ourselves we have choose to make the blessing, not the blesser, ultimate.
“They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.” Romans 1:25
Today don’t make that exchange. Be thankful for the things, the people, the job, the talents, the politics but praise the one who put all of those things in place. As you look at all the creation in front of you may your heart long to express gratitude for who is greatest.
May your heart be quick to see God in your gifts.
May you recognize Christ crucified and risen as the utmost reason for thankfulness.
Would awareness of your salvation swell so large in your soul that you can’t help but praise God with your thoughts and your lips and your interactions with those you sit with around the table.
And take a second to ask for more. Really.
Thank God for saving you and then beg him to open the eyes of so. many. more.
Ask that the Spirit would show people that their blessings aren’t praise worthy. Ask that today the lists of things, people and institutions would lead people to seek God. Ask that today people find Jesus.
God may we think so much of you and what you have done that we give our words and our prayers to the end of “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”
